I heard about these for the first time last year when Amanda and I visited Australia and saw a sign saying that the Daintree National Forest was part of the Wet Tropics of Australia UNESCO World Heritage site. So, upon arriving home, I did a bit of research and found this UNESCO World Heritage Site List. It’s really interesting to see the natural, and cultural sites that the UN Nature, Science, and Culture Organization has determined have universal value to the world, and should be protected. Since learning this, I’ve tried to pay attention to places I visit which have a nearby World Heritage site.
To date, Amanda and I have both visited:
- Statue of Liberty (USA)
- Great Barrier Reef (Australia)
- Wet Tropics of Australia (Australia)
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (Australia)
- Greater Blue Mountains area (Australia)
- Sydney Opera House (Australia)
- Roskilde Cathedral (Denmark)
I’ve additionally visited Kronborg Castle (Denmark) on my last trip to Copenhagen, most famous for being “Elsinore” in Hamlet. There’s some good links on the items in the list to give more information about the sites, some of which has been skipped over in the travel guides we’ve purchased, so check it out!
Which sites have you been to that are “don’t miss” status?
