Geeky Traveller wrote about Open Table, a great service we have used for a few years now. It only occurred to us to use it for travel a few months ago, and I love it. I have used it to book business dinners at home and away since then. The search capabilities make things especially easy for me. I like that you can choose your time and, if a table is not available, you will see other options. I’ve used it in Manhattan to find last-minute reservations near my office or hotel for a large group of co-workers. I used it in L.A. this year for finding a table during a busy convention as well. Another plus, I like that I can send an Outlook appointment for our reservation to Rob. Finally, in case you haven’t noticed, we’re suckers for points, and have earned gift certificates for dining at Open Table Restaurants.
Last week, for the first time, I also used Grub Hub, a food delivery service. I think this would be great for hotel travel when you are in the mood to stay in rather than go out. It isn’t available in all cities, but this service allows you to place a takeout order via the internet. I enjoyed purusing the list of possible restaurants for something local and different. I also prefer to take care of as many of my business expenses on a credit card as possible, and the internet is just a little easier for doing so than a telephone order where the restaurant is often loud.
Many travellers will say it’s better to ask around locally for restaurant recommendations. However, these are great options for a weary traveller.
